Porridge, thank god for porridge.
After trying several 'biological' paint strippers, I followed a post on moneysavingexpert.com, where two people were praising the qualities of porridge as a paint stripper. To cut a long and messy story short, I found it to work rather well on the delicate cornices.

AFTER - 2 days of letting the porridge do its dirty work, and then about an hour of delicate poking and scraping with toothpicks, toothbrushes (hmm, some sort of a dental theme going on here):

Now we've smeared the stuff everywhere, or to be more exact, onto the coving, where it will stay for just a day or two (we hope).
